Since the first lockdown, many people have embarked on the adventure of vegetable gardening. In order to further promote this kind of initiative, the Institut Français de Maurice (IFM) is organising a contest for the most beautiful vegetable gardens. Free and open to all aspiring gardeners residing in Mauritius, this contest will see a jury of professionals and amateurs reward the winner on the 5th of June 2021.
To your garden!
Initiated by Aurore Rouzzi, head of operations of the agribusiness division at Trimetys, the competition of the most beautiful vegetable gardens in Mauritius is organised by the IFM, with the support of Espace Maison. Highlighting the most beautiful gardens on the island, it is intended for adults and minors (with the authorisation of an adult) who have their own vegetable garden. Several types of projects will be judged:
- Those cultivating a vegetable plot
- Those growing a vegetable plot for educational purposes
- Those cultivating a vegetable plot as part of an association
To win the prize –which consists of a basket of gardening tools worth between Rs 3,000 and Rs 6,000–, certain criterias will be taken into account. Indeed, to put all the chances on your side, you will have to know your plants and their attributes, make sure they are diversified enough, and planted for relevant reasons. Indeed, some plants, even if they do not have food or aesthetic purposes, can protect the crops from harmful insects. You will still need to ensure that you have an aesthetically pleasing garden.
Then, the jury will study the applications to select four gardens in each category and will visit the selected plots. For the most ingenious, bonus points will be awarded if recycled objects have been integrated into the garden (pallet creations, diverted objects, etc).
The winners of each category will be rewarded on the 5th of June 2021 on the occasion of the World Environment Day.
